Division One Shield Final
Roscrea United
0-1(0-0)
Clodiagh Rangers
Matt Ryan
Clodiagh Rangers triumphed in the Divisional Shield Final in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon in a packed Roscrea United ground. The home team exploded out of the blocks, with Clodiagh put to the pin of their collars in the opening minutes and had the woodwork to thank for not falling behind to an early strike.

The visitors settled into the game after this opening scare and were relatively untroubled at the back for the remainder of the half and created two excellent chances to break the deadlock at the opposite end with Barry O’Loughlin and John Ryan denied by an in-form Roscrea keeper after initial approach work by Paul Doyle and Paul English respectively.

The second half followed a similar trend, with neither side willing to commit too many resources into attack for fear of conceding the lead goal. Buoyed on by a swelling home support, Roscrea began to assert themselves on proceedings and Adrian Cooke was forced into a string of fine saves to preserve parity.

Midway through the half the home crowd had something to cheer about as Roscrea United were awarded a penalty when their winger went down all to easily under a challenge in the area. Lady luck shone on the Drombane side however as the penalty was struck just wide of the left hand upright, and the incident seemed to inject renewed impetus into the away team’s play.

John Ryan, who was having an influential afternoon on the right wing, whipped in an inviting cross with Mark Quinlan desperately unlucky to see his half volley instinctively saved by the keeper.

Roscrea broke down the other end and man of the match, Adrian Cooke, had to dive full stretch across his goal to turn the ball around the post in what was turning out to be an afternoon of the battle of the keepers.

With time running out, and the inevitability of penalties approaching, Clodiagh's travelling support were spurred into rapturous celebrations as Matt Ryan scored what proved to be the winning goal with a deft header from a Paul English freekick.

A clearly ecstatic Greg Fewer accepted the shield from Gerry Larkin on behalf of Clodiagh Rangers and extended commiserations to Roscrea United, and commended them on a truly sporting contest.
