Clodiagh Rangers kick-started their season with an emphatic victory over Arra Rovers in the Division One Shield quarter final on Sunday afternoon.
Paul Doyle opened the scoring in the opening minutes on what would prove to be a prolific afternoon for the striker when he cooly rounded the keeper to slot home. Arra Rovers managed to get themselves back on level terms inside twenty minutes after some slack marking from a left wing free kick.
The Drombane side mounted an immediate riposte however, and when Barry O'Loughlin whipped a cross into the box, Joe Cullagh rose highest to head home for Clodiagh Rangers. Tommy Stevens doubled the lead with a sublime finish, after some neat approach play by James Murray and Denis McCullagh in the centre, rounding the full back and finishing clinically from a tight angle.
Arra Rovers kept the tie alive with an incisive counter attack goal just before the interval to reduce the arrears to the minimum. Clodiagh Rangers proved far too strong for a young Arra Rovers side in the second half though, and three further strikes from Doyle, together with a second from Stevens put Clodiagh Rangers safely into the semi final on Wednesday evening.
