Clodiagh Rangers travelled to Rear Cross last Friday evening for a semi final clash in the Premier Division Shield, where the excellent weather was suitably matched by the playing surface.

Clodiagh Rangers travelled with a strong squad which started brightly thanks to the speed of Mark Quinlan and Joe Cullagh up front, with Cullagh forcing a fine save from the Rear Cross keeper after sneaking behind the home sides defence and latching on to a great pass from Quinlan.
The home side then began to grab a hold of the game and came close on a number of occasions, but the defensive line up of O'Loughlin, Carr, Fogarty and O'Dwyer proved well capable and limited the home to efforts from outside the Clodiagh Rangers penalty area. Adrian Cooke in the Clodiagh Rangers goal was called upon to turn a great effort from the home side around the post to keep the game level.

Clodiagh Rangers began to find their feet in the second and with thanks to Paul Doyle and Stephen Fewer began to make some progress going forward and place the home side under some pressure. Then Rear Cross scored somewhat against the run of play when their midfield was afforded space in the middle of the park to move forward and dispatch a powerful shot in to the top corner of the net, despite the efforts of the Clodiagh Rangers' keeper who was unlucky to keep it out after getting a hand to the shot.

Clodiagh Rangers then rallied with a new sense of urgency and Paul Doyle began to cause the home side headaches, as did Patrick Purcell on his introduction for Joe Cullagh. Rear Cross were being limited to counter attacks and nearly doubled their lead when they broke forward and again Cooke in the Clodaigh goal was called upon to keep a low powerful shot destined for the bottom right hand corner out.

Clodaigh Rangers then pushed forward in the later stages of the game with Michael Brown making good progress down the left wing and as a result won a corner. Paul Doyle took the corner and found Declan Carr near the back post who headed home from close range despite a defender on the line.

The match then finished level and went to the dreaded penalty shootout.

Clodiagh Rangers penalty takers were Declan Carr, Mark Quinlan, Barry O'Loughlin, Matt Ryan and John O'Dwyer and all five were placed expertly to the back of net. Rear Cross missed their first penalty and as a result of John O'Dwyer scoring his penalty, Rear Cross had no need to take their last and Clodiagh Rangers progress to Premier League Shield Final with their first opportunity to win silverware this season.
