Clodiagh Rangers were brought crashing down to earth with a resounding defeat at the hands of Roscrea United at their town grounds on Sunday morning.

The home team exacted a ruthless revenge for the defeat inflicted upon them by the Drombane side in the Shield final a fortnight earlier. The opening half hour of the match was fiercely competitive despite Roscrea United taking an early lead with a headed effort from a right-wing freekick.

Clodiagh responded strongly and were the superior side for a twenty-minute period, but the match was effectively over at half time with Roscrea United tagging on four unanswered goals in a frantic ten-minute period before the break.

The visitors tried to plug the dam in the second half but were undone in defence again ten minutes after the break. Matt Ryan finally got Clodiagh Rangers on the scoreboard midway through the half with an individual effort, dribbling his way into the area before unleashing a shot beyond the Roscrea keeper.

Roscrea United showed no signs of compassion however and rattled home two further goals in the final quarter hour to leave the Drombane side with their heaviest defeat in recent history.
