Clodiagh played second division side Ballymackey in the first round of the Munster Junior Cup on Sunday afternoon last in Drombane.

Clodiagh were on the backfoot after a lethargic start and Ballymackey took a deserved lead when Timmy Fleming put them ahead with a deft flick from the edge of the area.

Shortly afterwards Paul Doyle combined with Colm Breen to slot home the equaliser as the weather began to deteriorate. A resolute Ballymackey were not deterred and regained the lead with a smashing strike from outside the area.

A rejuvenated Doyle was not going to be outdone on his home patch and curled home a fantastic equaliser after cutting in from the left.

With half time approaching Clodiagh seemed pleased with parity but the Ballymackey winger added his name to the shortlist for goal of the game when he drove past three Clodiagh defenders to give the away side a deserved halftime lead.

The second half began with Clodiagh upping the tempo in search of the leveller. Colm Breen was not long finding it finishing off some good approach work from Mark Quinlan with a well-placed header.

Clodiagh were now dominating possession and both Quinlan and McCullagh went close to giving them the lead. As the half moved on Clodiagh could not find a winner and managed to defend well against the Ballymackey counter attacks.

The inevitable extra time failed to separate the sides, Ballymackey going desperately close to a winner in the second period with a shot from the left shaving the right post.

Adrian Cooke was inspired for Clodiagh in the shoot-out saving two kicks and forcing the third kicker into a miss. Mark Quinlan, Brian Carroll and Denis McCullagh slotted home for Clodiagh.
