Clodiagh Rangers B' played host to Nenagh C' on Sunday desperately in need of three points to kick start their season, and the in-form Joe Cullagh did not disappoint, firing Clodiagh Rangers into an early lead with his fifth of the season, after Patrick Purcell had played him through from midfield.
Clodiagh Rangers play in the early stages belied their lowly league position and the home side threatened to run riot when they tagged on a second goal inside the opening quarter hour. Michael Ryan, showing good composure on the edge of the box, dribbled by two despairing challenges before finishing confidently to the net.
Clodiagh Rangers continued to pass the ball well, but in a schizophrenic first half performance collapsed in the closing stages to allow Nenagh in for two goals in quick succession.
Firstly Michael Duff converting from a corner, and then moments later, Martin Donnellan restoring parity. Frustrated by their turn of fortune, the half-time break was a welcome tonic for Clodiagh Rangers, and they resumed the second half much improved. Nenagh, sensing an opportunity to take all three points, began to push hard and chances opened up at both ends.
The Clodiagh Rangers players were working hard for each other, and were desperately unlucky not to take the lead when Jack Ryan crashed the ball off the crossbar from some distance. With time running out Clodiagh Rangers scored the winner when the industrious Patrick Purcell raced onto a Stephen Ryan through ball and lobbed the keeper.
