On Saturday evening last, Clodiagh Rangers B travelled to play Sallypark Odhrans B in their 3rd league game of the season, and in truth, it proved to be a very close contest.
Clodiagh Rangers started brightly, maintaining possession well and creating some half chances, but ultimately failed to capitalize on them.
After the half hour mark, a misunderstanding in the Clodiagh Rangers defence allowed Joe Shanahan to pounce for Sallypark and score the opener.
Moments later, further hesitancy in the visitors defence, and this time David O'Brien was on hand to give Sallypark a two-goal lead.
Clodiagh Rangers managed to pull a goal back before half time, when a constant barrage of pressure on the Sallypark goal paid dividend and an unfortunate Sallypark defender deflected the ball to his own net from a Patrick Purcell throw in, leaving the bare minimum between the sides at half time.
Into the second half and Clodiagh Rangers had plenty of possession but didn't finish the chances created and this was to prove vital as the game went on. Following a period of Clodiagh Rangers possession, play broke down in midfield and a counter attack from Sallypark yielded a second goal for Joe Shanahan and effectively ended the contest at 3-1 with ten minutes remaining.
Clodiagh Rangers will count themselves unlucky not to get something from the game but will know that they have to become more decisive and clinical in front of goal if they are to mount a challenge near the top the Division 3. On an individual note, Joseph Bourke and Morgan Greene stood out for Clodiagh Rangers with impressive performances.
