Clodiagh faced a tough task with an away trip to table toppers Gurtagarry on Sunday morning last.

The hosts have been unbeaten all season but were made work extremely hard to claim victory against a resolute Clodiagh side.

With the teams locked at 0-0 on the hour mark John Ryan produced some wonderful skill on the left side of the midfield to shake off his marker before producing a sublime pass to Dean Carew who beat the offside trap and confidently struck past the outrushing Gurtagarry keeper Brendan Hayes.

Gurtagarry soon rang the changes and to good effect. The hosts broke through the Clodiagh rearguard on the right hand side and set up substitute Paddy O'Rourke on the edge of the box who equalised with an emphatic strike.

Clodiagh almost got back in front moments later when a Niall Shanahan effort from 15 yards just went over the cross bar. The game's defining moment occurred however with 15 minutes to go.

Gurtagarry were awarded a much disputed penalty and Billy Corcoran converted to put them in front. Gurtagarry made sure of victory with minutes remaining thanks to another O' Rourke strike.

Despite the loss Clodiagh can take great heart from what was a good performance against the champions elect.
