Clodiagh Rangers Youths welcomed local rivals Holycross Youths to their Drombane venue last Saturday and were anxious to kickstart their league campaign with a victory.

Despite the wet start to the day, playing conditions were good and Clodiagh Rangers settled into the game quickly and displayed great attacking intentions with some neat interplay between the midfield, and Ger Grant and Andy Ely causing the Holycorss rearguard early headaches. The first clear cut chance of the game fell to Clodiagh Rangers when Sean Ryan received a defence splitting pass from Stephen Quinn only to see his effort saved by the on rushing keeper.

The game continued in this fashion for most of the first half with Clodiagh Rangers' rear guard dealing effectively with the visitors attacks. Unfortunately, an injury ended Shane Kinane's game shortly before have time and had to be replaced by Kevin Ryan.

Whilst Kinane was being attended to off the field, Clodiagh Rangers pushed on and Sean Ryan found himself in a position to cooly slot the ball home just before the half time whistle. Unsurprisingly, the visitors upped their game for the second half and threatened the home goal on a number of occasions, but found Gavin Ryan in fine form as he made a number of important saves.

Once again the home defence, ably assisted by James Horan and Stephen Quinn in midfield weathered the storm and began to push forward again. Clodiagh Rangers had a number of good chances but a mixture of some wayward shooting and great saves from the Holycross keeper meant that they still only found themselves ahead by the slimmest of margins.

In the dying minutes of the game, substitute Robert Murphy found himself one on one with the away keeper and clinically slotted the ball home to secure all three points for the home side.
